My Top 5 Favorite Fruits & Veggies to Plant this Spring & Summer
There’s just something about spring that makes me want to get my hands in the dirt and start planting. Whether it’s the longer days, the warmer sun, or just the excitement of growing something from scratch, I always look forward to getting the garden up and growing.
Over the years, I’ve found a few fruits and veggies that I just love to grow. They’re easy to grow, super satisfying, and honestly—they just taste better when they come out of your own backyard. Here are my top 5 favorites spring plants-
1. Tomatoes
I mean… is it even a garden without tomatoes? They’re one of the easiest and most rewarding things to grow. I love watching them go from tiny flowers to full-blown juicy tomatoes. Whether it’s cherry tomatoes for snacking or Romas for salsa, you really can’t go wrong. Just give them plenty of sun and a sturdy cage—they grow fast and wild!
2. Strawberries
I plant mine in raised beds or containers so they don’t spread too crazy, and once they get going, they’re pretty low maintenance. There is nothing like picking a warm strawberry right off the plant and popping it in your mouth.
3.Bell Peppers
I always get a lot of bell peppers per plant. Once it starts, you’ll be giving them away to neighbors because you’ll have so many. I love how versatile they are in the kitchen—grilled, sautéed, baked into bread… they’re a spring garden must-have.
4.Jalapenos
You can’t have a salsa garden without jalapeños and I make a lot of salsa. Jalapeños are surprisingly easy to grow and also make a lot of peppers per plant. I also never have any issues with them and critters so that’s a big positive.
5. Blackberries
These have become the crown jewel of my garden. I have mine growing on a double arched trellis which is my favorite feature in our garden. This plant also comes back every year which is always nice and the berries seem to multiply every year as well. This has become a staple my whole family looks forward to.
Honestly, there’s something about growing your own food that just hits different. If you’re thinking of starting a garden this spring, these five are great places to start. They’re beginner-friendly, productive, and you’ll actually use them. Plus, nothing beats the satisfaction of eating something you grew yourself.
Happy planting!
