How To Have A Harvest You Are Really Proud Of

If you’ve ever spent months nurturing a crop only to end up disappointed at harvest time, you know how frustrating it can be. One often overlooked reason? The wrong fertilizer or in my case, no fertilizer at all.

It might not be the most exciting topic to research, but choosing the right fertilizer is one of the biggest factors in how well your crops grow. The truth is, not all fertilizers are created equal—and not all plants need the same nutrients. Taking the time to research and choose the right one can literally mean the difference between a healthy, thriving crop and a lackluster yield. This year my potatoes & onions did a million times better than they did last year all because of the fertilizer that we used.

Your Soil Isn’t Like Everyone Else’s

Every piece of land is different. What worked for your neighbor might not work for you. A soil test can tell you exactly what your land is lacking—whether it’s nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, or micronutrients like zinc or magnesium. When you know what your soil needs, you can choose a fertilizer that fills those gaps. Otherwise, you could be wasting money applying nutrients your soil already has in abundance—or worse, doing harm.

Different Crops, Different Needs

Potatoes, tomatoes, onions, and cucumbers don’t all thrive on the same fertilizer blend. For example, root vegetables like carrots need a very different N-P-K (nitrogen-phosphorus-potassium) ratio than leafy greens like lettuce. Some crops are sensitive to certain additives and salts. Knowing your specific crop’s nutrient requirements helps you match them with the right formula. We were focused on onions & potatoes this year since ours did poorly last year & we eat a lot of both. In our case learning our specific crops needs proved to be necessary for a great harvest!

Bigger Yields, Better Taste

The right fertilizer doesn’t just make your plants grow bigger—it can improve the quality of what you harvest.

Fruits and vegetables grown with balanced nutrition tend to be juicier, more flavorful, and more nutrient-dense. If you sell what you grow, that means happier customers and better profits. If you grow for your family, it means healthier meals on your table.

So excited of the harvest we had because of these products! So many potatoes & onions I now have to figure out how to store them & what recipes I am going to make with them.
